Lac de Sainte-Croix is the most recent (1975) and largest reservoir to have been created on the Verdon. It is approximately 10 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide.
A Roman bridge and the village of Salles-sur-Verdon have been submerged by the water and now lie at the bottom of the lake… You can swim in the wonderfully refreshing water. During the tourist season, you can also hire canoes, pedalos and electric boats, which you can then use to explore the Canyon du Verdon. It’s a truly unique experience to sail through the Verdon in a boat, with the steep cliffs rising up on either side.
On the northern side of the lake lies the Pont de Galetas, which connects the left and right banks of the Verdon. The Barrage de Sainte-Croix is situated in the south of the lake. It was built between 1971 and 1974. It is 95 metres high and 133 metres long. On the southern side there are lovely sandy beaches, whilst the northern side of the lake is rocky. On both sides, there are charming villages to visit, with plenty of small restaurants and all sorts of water-based attractions.
