Lorgues

Thirteen kilometres west of Draguignan lies the flourishing town of Lorgues. Lorgues, a typical Provençal village halfway between the Gorges du Verdon and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, is dotted with vineyards, olive trees, woodlands, grain fields and beautiful rivers where you can enjoy walking to the sound of cicadas.

Lorgues, a sunny village in Provence, is steeped in history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the village still bears traces of its past, notably the dolmens, as well as the old ramparts, remnants of the Middle Ages. The Rue de la République is Lorgues' central artery, lined with bourgeois and grand houses built between the 18th and 19th centuries. Here you'll find one of the finest buildings, the Hôtel de Ville de Lorgues. Completed in 1833, it reflects the town's importance in the local landscape following the revolution. Not far away, the bell tower with its clock tower dominates the town from its 28-metre height. But the most imposing building in Lorgues is certainly the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, the second largest religious monument in the Var. Built in the early 18th century, this church has a richly decorated interior, including an organ, a pulpit and some very fine ornaments. Continue your visit to the heart of the village by heading to the Place Neuve, adorned with plane trees, an old courthouse, a fountain and a wash house, all forming a perfect postcard scene of a typical Provençal holiday. During your walks you'll certainly come across many fountains and washing places scattered throughout the town, as well as the remains of flour and olive mills, evidence of the region's once-strong agricultural activity. And if you're interested in art and historic monuments, you can add to your (long!) list of things to do a visit to the chapel of Notre Dame de Ben Va (3 kilometres from Lorgues) and Saint-Ferréol, well known in the region for its museum of sacred art.

Walking

Walkers can take two routes through Lorgues and the surrounding area, the "La campagne de Pey-Cervier" route (5.4 kilometres) and the "Saint Ferréol" route (2 kilometres).

For nature outings, we also recommend a visit to the 500-hectare Château de Berne Park, crossed by 6 walking trails ranging from 3 to 15 kilometres and 4 marked mountain bike trails (4 to 10 kilometres), allowing you to discover the full beauty of the site with its remarkable wildlife and plant life.

Panoramic views over the Massif des Maures, a Roman bridge to discover, vineyards, ruins hidden in the undergrowth, so many beautiful landscapes to explore with family or friends.

Oppidum

On the side of the Saint-Ferréol hill, not far from the wall of the hermit's dwelling, stands an oppidum, a type of shelter made of dry stone walls built on high ground to serve as an observation post during attacks. This Ligurian camp dates back to the 4th century BC and is the oldest evidence of human presence in Lorgues.

Right next to this site, which is open to visitors, you'll also find a fitness trail, perfect for a bit of outdoor exercise.
